The city’s Planning & Development Department is reviewing zoning reforms to encourage mixed-use and higher-density housing near downtown and university areas to address these issues.

To foster economic diversity and support local entrepreneurs, the North Dakota Department of Commerce has relaunched Innovate ND. The program is divided into two six-month phases, each offering up to $25,000 in reimbursements. Participants must complete both phases within 12 months. Eligibility criteria include being based and headquartered in North Dakota, with at least one founder residing in the state. Retail, hospitality, and local service-based ventures are not eligible.

Manufacturing is an essential industry in North Dakota, with more than 24,000 residents working in some form of manufacturing, accounting for 5.87% of the total workforce. In Bismarck-Mandan, manufacturing firms support several different sectors, including agriculture, food and beverage, energy, and equipment. The region has seen a 112% increase in manufacturing exports in the past nine years, indicating significant growth in this sector.
