Bismarck’s Air Quality Challenges: A Community Concern

Recent findings from the American Lung Association’s 2026 “State of the Air” report have placed Bismarck in a concerning position regarding air quality. The city now ranks 9th worst in the nation for short-term particle pollution, with Burleigh County experiencing an average of 10 unhealthy days per year, earning an ‘F’ grade. This marks a decline from the previous year’s ranking of 14th worst, highlighting a troubling trend for our community.

Particle pollution, often referred to as soot, originates from sources such as wildfires, wood-burning stoves, coal-fired power plants, and diesel engines. Exposure to these fine particles can lead to severe health issues, including asthma attacks, heart attacks, strokes, and even lung cancer. Children, whose lungs are still developing, are particularly vulnerable to these pollutants.

Jon Hunter, senior director of Healthy Air Solutions for the American Lung Association, emphasized the gravity of the situation: “Clean air is essential to the health and wellbeing of families across North Dakota. Children deserve to breathe air that won’t make them sick.” He further noted that the current administration’s rollbacks of critical air quality regulations are exacerbating the problem, urging local policymakers to take decisive action to improve air quality.

In addition to particle pollution, Bismarck’s ozone pollution has also worsened. The city now ranks 84th worst in the nation for ozone pollution, with Burleigh County averaging 2.7 unhealthy days per year, resulting in a ‘D’ grade. This is a decline from the previous year’s ranking of 92nd worst, with 2.3 unhealthy days.

These deteriorating air quality metrics underscore the need for community engagement and proactive measures. Residents are encouraged to participate in local discussions, support policies aimed at reducing emissions, and stay informed about air quality levels to protect their health and that of their families.
